About

Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, action-adventure story set in Night City, a megalopolis obsessed with power, glamour and body modification. You play as V, a mercenary outlaw going after a one-of-a-kind implant that is the key to immortality. You can customize your character’s cyberware, skillset and playstyle, and explore a vast city where the choices you make shape the story and the world around you.

Become a cyberpunk, an urban mercenary equipped with cybernetic enhancements and build your legend on the streets of Night City.

Characters

V

V is you, us, the player. The first person singular. We see the world through the implants in her eyes. We maim enemies with the blades in his arms. When a thug points a gun at their head, it is pointed straight at us. When you ask someone to sit in someone else’s skin like this, you have to make sure they feel comfortable in it. That’s why player customization is a key part of Cyberpunk 2077. From the character creator to the clothes you don to the choices you make, you create the V you want to play. And in your head-canon, “V” can stand for whatever you want.

But V is also the protagonist of a specific story we want to tell. To make this story work, she has to be defined, has to have a certain essence. For example, every V is roughly 23 years old and a cyberpunk, someone outside Night City’s rigid castes and hierarchies. Every player chooses one of V’s three possible backgrounds: corporate boardrooms, city streets or Nomad wastelands. V always loses all the capital and cred he had in this previous life and has to start from scratch, Jackie at their side. After that, well, she goes for a wild ride, its main direction plotted by us, its twists and turns up to you to decide.

Johnny Silverhand

As CDPR puts it in their early character briefs, “Johnny is lean and wiry, with a lot of sex appeal. His entire body exudes a kind of built-up tension and nervous energy. Even when he seems laid back, you get the impression he could flip out at any moment for the most unexpected reason.” He’s self-confident in the extreme—to put it bluntly, he’s a narcissist with a massive ego. Though he’s only in his late 40s, he’s seen and done and fucked it all already.

He’s also stuck in V’s head. Our head, that is, the head of a fledgling cyberpunk, an unproven rookie, someone who’s still just figuring out who they really are—and he’s not too happy about it. Johnny’s therefore a protagonist that’s also, in a way, an antagonist. He’s a clashing, constant presence. So it’s a good thing he’s so damn likeable.

Judy Alvarez

One of braindance's most gifted editors and a skilled techie. If she wanted to, she could get hired at any corpo entertainment studio and make bank, but Judy values her independence too much to sell out - she rejects every offer that comes her way. Her anarchist spirit drew her to the Mox in the hope that they could improve the lives of people in Night City. Her biggest flaw is that she can't keep her mouth shut in the face of injustice - something that always gets her in trouble. For some, though, it's her greatest virtue.

Night City’s premier braindance technician, heavily respected for her skills, innovation and creativity. Motivated to change things for the better she teamed with The Mox and currently works for them as a BD technician and editor

Jackie Welles

A proud son of Heywood and an even prouder son of Mama Welles. Jackie's stubborn - when he wants something, he won't stop (or shut up about it) until he gets his hands on it. Jackie always wanted a lot out of life - maybe too much.

As a teenager, he joined the Valentinos gang, but realizing how much he was capable of - he quit. For years he hustled through the unforgiving world of merckwork, because you need more than a go-getter attitude to sit at the big boys' table - you need street cred. Jackie's life goal has always been to become a legend at the Afterlife and make a heap of eddies along the way.

Evelyn Parker

Evelyn is a beautiful enigma. At first glance, she's nothing but riddles and contradictions; while Evelyn looks like a high-ranking corpo, she arranges a meeting in some streetgang dive bar. She seems to be a rich worldly woman, but she rounds up a rag-tag bunch of rookie mercs to swipe something for her. Humorous and charming, yet she drives a hard bargain. Puts her faith in professionals, but still wants to pull all the strings.

When it comes to Evelyn, only one thing is certain: tread carefully. Her beauty, cunning and fierce determination are a volatile mix.

Goro Takemura

Recruited by Arasaka as a young boy, later conscripted into Arasaka's corporate army and eventually joined their special forces division. He was given an education and ranked top of his class in the academy. Saburo Arasaka himself came to recruit one of the special forces operators to be his personal bodyguard, and chose Takemura out of hundreds of candidates. During his time as a bodyguard, he began to idolize Saburo and developed undying loyalty to the Arasaka family. As Saburo's personal protector, Takemura received elite cyberware, including endoskeleton reinforcing his neck and spine.

The sole living witness to Yorinobu's crime. In his mission to find the truth, Takemura became Arasaka's most wanted fugitive pursued by every agent in Night City. The ex-bodyguard is driven by a desire for vengeance and won't rest until he brings Saburo's murderer to justice - even if it means working with a petty thief like V.

City

Night City began as an empty plot on the California coast where Richard Night, visionary architect and entrepreneur, willed into existence a city meant to embody his ideals, to break from what he saw as the mistakes of the past. After his death, the megacorporations took control—and the city mushroomed into a sprawling metropolis, its growth directed by economic highs and lows rather than by any singular plan. Today, Night City is home to over five million people. Dozens of different cultures and ethnic groups intermix and form homogenous communities that lend a distinct look to the districts in which they live.

Periods of differing architectural styles and technological development, economic booms and busts, changes in the power structure, natural disasters and terrorist attacks: all left their mark on the face of Night City, shaping its look and the mood of its boroughs and districts. When traveling between them, you should feel as if you’re visiting different countries, moving from one exotic land to another.

Because above all, Night City is about contrasts.
